Arsenal have gained a clearer understanding of what it could take to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, with reports suggesting a bid of around £75 million could prompt further negotiations.
Although Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is not believed to have held direct talks with Newcastle over a potential deal, a formal offer is expected. Reports earlier this week claimed Guimaraes had informed Newcastle of his desire to leave, with the Brazilian midfielder said to favour a move to the Emirates.
According to the Daily Mail, an initial Arsenal approach was rejected, but a £75 million offer could encourage Newcastle to reconsider. The report also claims there is surprise within the Newcastle hierarchy that Berta has yet to make direct contact over the proposed transfer.
Guimaraes remains under contract at St James’ Park until 2028, meaning Newcastle are under no immediate pressure to sell. Whether Arsenal can reach an agreement before the transfer window closes remains uncertain.
The 28-year-old recently represented Brazil at the World Cup in North America, helping his country reach the last 16 before they were eliminated by Norway.
Previous reports from The Athletic suggested Arsenal had already seen a £55 million bid rejected, with the club believed to be willing to increase their offer to around £60 million.
Following their Premier League title-winning campaign, Arsenal are looking to strengthen both their midfield and attacking options ahead of the new season.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have already lost two key players this summer. Anthony Gordon joined Barcelona in a £69 million deal, while Sandro Tonali completed a permanent £100 million move to Tottenham Hotspur, with additional performance-related add-ons.
Given those departures, it remains to be seen whether Newcastle would be willing to sanction the sale of another influential player before the transfer window closes.
