Arsenal are reportedly considering an ambitious move for Vinicius Junior, but any deal for the Real Madrid star would require a British record transfer fee.
According to reports in Spain, Real Madrid have placed a minimum asking price of €160 million (£137 million) on the Brazilian winger as they seek to avoid losing him on a free transfer when his contract expires next summer. Negotiations over a new deal have reportedly stalled, leaving his long-term future at the Santiago Bernabéu uncertain.
The 26-year-old is believed to be one of the players Arsenal are monitoring as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen the left side of his attack ahead of the new season. Vinicius enjoyed another productive campaign despite Real Madrid’s disappointing season, scoring 22 goals and providing 14 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions.
However, securing his signature would come at a huge cost. Arsenal would have to surpass the current British transfer record, set when Alexander Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle United for £125 million last summer. Reports suggest Real Madrid are unwilling to negotiate unless their valuation is met, with any deal likely to include substantial performance-related bonuses.
The Spanish giants are expected to hold further contract talks with Vinicius at the end of July, and Arsenal are likely to keep a close eye on those discussions. If no agreement is reached, speculation over the winger’s future could intensify.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen to retain the Brazil international and is said to oppose any move that would see him join the Premier League champions.
Despite that stance, Real could be forced to generate funds if they proceed with their reported interest in RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, who is valued at around £102 million. Arsenal have also been linked with the highly-rated Ivorian, meaning the two clubs could find themselves competing for the same transfer targets this summer.
Although a move for Vinicius would represent one of the biggest transfers in football history, Arteta has previously made it clear that Arsenal must compete for the world’s best players if they are to remain at the top of European football.
Speaking in 2024 when asked about the possibility of signing Kylian Mbappé, Arteta said: “Why not? If we want to be the best team, then you need to have the best players. When there is a player of that calibre, we always have to be in that conversation.”
Those comments continue to reflect Arsenal’s growing ambition as they weigh up what would be one of the most significant signings in the club’s history.
