Naxxar Lions have rejected the resignation of head coach George Vella, reaffirming their commitment to him despite the team’s ongoing relegation battle. The club’s committee convened an emergency meeting following Monday’s 3-0 defeat to Balzan FC and unanimously decided that Vella would remain in charge for the remainder of the season.
According to sources close to Maltasport Naxxar committee concluded that it was never in their plans to replace Vella. Sources have also stated that: “This is a project we started together, and just as George trusted us when he joined Naxxar despite the logistical and infrastructural challenges we face, we must now stand by him. We believe in his ability to lead this team, and we are committed to seeing this season through together.”
Vella had tendered his resignation after a string of disappointing results left the club near the bottom of the 360 Malta Premier League table. However, Naxxar’s leadership remains convinced that he is the right person to steer the team away from relegation danger.

The decision signals the club’s belief in stability as they attempt to turn their fortunes around. Despite an active January transfer window aimed at strengthening the squad, results have yet to improve. The Lions now face an uphill task to retain their top-flight status, but with the backing of the club, Vella will continue to lead the charge.
With time running out, Naxxar supporters will hope that the club’s renewed commitment to their coach will provide the unity and determination needed to secure vital results in the weeks ahead.
