Marsaxlokk produced a spirited second-half comeback to defeat league leaders Sliema Wanderers 2-1 and move top of the Closing Round Top Six standings.
Sliema took the lead on 15 minutes when Adam Magri Overend’s low cross deflected off Marsaxlokk defender Leandro Aguirre and wrong-footed goalkeeper Matthew Calleja Cremona, giving the Blues an early advantage.
Despite the early setback, Marsaxlokk controlled much of the first half, creating several chances—most notably through Alex De Aguiar, whose low drive was turned away by Kelvin Agu. However, their final ball often let them down, and they went into the break trailing.
After the interval, Marsaxlokk’s pressure finally paid off. In the 60th minute, Aguirre made amends for his earlier misfortune by curling home a brilliant free-kick from the edge of the area to level the score.
Seventeen minutes later, Marsaxlokk completed their turnaround. A long ball from Lucas Lopez Dessypris caused confusion in the Sliema defence, and De Aguiar capitalised by looping a clever header over the onrushing Agu to make it 2-1.
Sliema nearly snatched an equaliser in stoppage time when Kyrian Nwoko struck the post after connecting with Simon Zibo’s dangerous low cross, but Marsaxlokk held on for a crucial victory.
