Floriana and Ħamrun Spartans cancelled each other out in a balanced encounter between the winners of the opening round and the favourites for the closing round. The match ended goalless, with Ħamrun looking more dangerous in the first half, while Floriana responded well in the second period. The match also saw the debut of Floriana’s latest signings: former Gżira player Zachary Scerri and Elvis Mashike, who was up against his former team.

Floriana almost stunned their opponents early on when Jake Grech made a surging run into the box and fired a low shot, but Henry Bonello was quick off his line to block.

Ħamrun’s first threat came just after the quarter-hour mark from a move initiated by a Talison Barboza free-kick. Luke Montebello headed the ball down to former Floriana player Ryan Camenzuli, whose trademark shot from outside the box was well saved for a corner by Christoffer Mafoumbi. From the resulting corner by Talison, Steve Borg sent a header narrowly wide.

Just after the half-hour mark, a long-range effort from Elionay Freitas was comfortably saved by Mafoumbi.

Floriana came out strongly in the second half and once again came close to breaking the deadlock early when, from a pass by Jork Becerra, former player Grech advanced and unleashed a low shot, but Bonello was equal to it.

Midway through the second half, a free-kick from Talison struck the defensive wall, but Mafoumbi still had to react quickly to turn it behind for a corner.

The match remained balanced until the final whistle, with tensions running high, leading to Floriana official Mano Micallef being sent off from the touchline.

Looking ahead, Ħamrun will face another tough test next week as they take on fellow title contenders Birkirkara.
