Floriana FC, winners of this season’s Opening Round, have made significant moves in the transfer market, announcing the addition of several key players to their squad. These acquisitions come as part of the club’s strategy to strengthen the team ahead of the crucial second half of the season.
The Maltese club confirmed the signing of 29-year-old Canadian goalkeeper Yann-Alexandre Fillion, who will replace departing Spanish goalkeeper Saúl Gracia. Gracia’s contract was mutually terminated at the end of 2024. Fillion brings a wealth of experience, having played in top divisions in Canada and Finland, and is expected to provide strong competition for Floriana’s first-choice goalkeeper, Christoffer Mafoumbi.
Standing at an impressive 190 cm, Fillion was notably signed by FC Zürich from FC Montréal in 2016 for €450,000, demonstrating his pedigree. His arrival is seen as a crucial reinforcement for Floriana’s backline as they aim to maintain their strong defensive record.
Floriana have also welcomed back a familiar face to Maltese football, with the signing of 25-year-old Argentine left-wing back Gonzalo Gamarra Leyton. Gamarra previously played in Malta for Senglea Athletic, making 25 appearances in the Premier League during his two-season stint, starting at the age of 19.
After leaving Malta, Gamarra furthered his career in Europe, with stints in Switzerland and Croatia. Most recently, he returned to his homeland, playing regular football in Argentina’s Primera Nacional, the second division. His return to Malta marks a homecoming for the versatile defender, who will be eager to make an immediate impact for the Greens.
Floriana’s transfer activity continued with the acquisition of 26-year-old Colombian defensive midfielder Jork Becerra. Becerra joined Floriana after his first European experience with AP Brera Strumica in North Macedonia’s top division, where he featured in 11 matches during the first half of the season.
Before his move to Europe, Becerra gained valuable experience playing in Colombia’s Liga FUTVE, showcasing his ability to compete at a high level. His defensive skills and work rate are expected to add depth and stability to Floriana’s midfield.
Club president Johann Said has further bolstered the squad with two more standout signings:
Gabriel ‘El Pito’ Sotomayor, the 26-year-old Bolivian attacking midfielder joins Floriana, bringing speed, flair, and goal-scoring abilities to the team. Known for his dynamic style of play, Sotomayor is expected to play a pivotal role in driving the club toward its goals this season. Fernando Júnior, a Brazilian winger with extensive experience, Fernando adds versatility and quality to the squad. His ability to adapt to various attacking roles will be invaluable to Floriana as they continue to build a competitive team.
Under Johann Said’s leadership, Floriana FC’s transfer strategy has highlighted a clear emphasis on South American talent, with the majority of their signings coming from the region. This influx of new players is a testament to the club’s ambition to challenge for honours and maintain their position among Malta’s elite football clubs.
As the January transfer window unfolds, Floriana’s bold moves have reinvigorated the squad, giving fans much to look forward to as the team gears up for the challenges ahead. The addition of these talented players promises an exciting second half of the season for the Greens.
