FIFA has announced the referees and assistant referees selected for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will take place in Chile from 27 September to 19 October 2025.
In total, 54 match officials have been chosen, 18 referees and 36 assistant referees, representing 22 FIFA member associations.
Pierluigi Collina, Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, said:
“After the success of the FIFA Club World Cup, we’re looking forward to another great tournament. This is an important opportunity for referees to be part of a competition that features the stars of the future, and also to continue testing Football Video Support (FVS), which has shown promising results so far.”
FVS will be used throughout the tournament. It is a more cost-effective system compared to VAR and was previously trialled at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic.

Unlike VAR, FVS does not involve dedicated video match officials. Instead, team coaches can request a limited number of reviews per match for major incidents such as goals, penalties, red cards, or mistaken identity. Players may also suggest to their coach that a review is needed.
Massimo Busacca, FIFA Director of Refereeing, added:
“Chile is a country with a strong football culture, and this tournament is a great chance to leave a lasting impact in terms of refereeing. The U-20 World Cup is a high-level competition that requires referees to read the game well.”
