Sweden and Germany remain joint leaders at the top of Group C in the Women’s European Championship after both teams secured victories in their respective matches yesterday. With two wins from two games, both sides currently boast maximum points.
Sweden delivered a commanding performance against Poland, earning a comfortable 3-0 victory. The match saw the Swedes dominate possession and create numerous scoring opportunities. Stina Blackstenius opened the scoring in the 28th minute, giving Sweden an early advantage. Early in the second half, Kosovare Asllani doubled the lead with a clinical finish, and Lina Hurtig sealed the result later in the half, wrapping up a well-deserved win for the Scandinavian side.
The victory underlined Sweden’s status as one of the tournament favourites, as they combined defensive solidity with attacking flair.
Germany faced a sterner challenge against a resilient Denmark side but managed to come from behind to secure a 2-1 win. The Germans thought they had taken the lead early on when Klara Bühl found the net, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review.
Instead, it was Denmark who struck first through Amalie Vangsgaard, who gave her team the lead before halftime, putting pressure on the Germans going into the second half.
However, Germany responded strongly after the break. In the 56th minute, Sjoeke Nüsken equalised from the penalty spot after a foul inside the box. Ten minutes later, Lea Schüller completed the comeback with a well-placed finish, ensuring that Germany stayed level on points with Sweden at the top of the group.
Today, the action continues in Group C with two highly anticipated matches:
- 6:00 PM (CET): England vs Netherlands – A clash between two traditional powerhouses of European women’s football. England will be looking to assert their credentials, while the Netherlands aim to bounce back from a mixed start.
