PSG seek redemption against Seattle as Knockout hopes hang in the balance

Paris Saint-Germain face an unexpectedly crucial clash in their final FIFA Club World Cup Group B fixture against Seattle Sounders, with the European champions needing victory to guarantee passage to the last 16. Meanwhile, the Major League Soccer side are fighting to avoid a winless exit from the tournament.

Seattle’s campaign has unravelled rapidly. A 3–1 defeat to Atlético Madrid on Thursday condemned them to a second straight loss and left them bottom of the group. Despite showing spirit and attacking intent, taking 16 shots against Atleti, an eight-minute defensive lapse in the second half proved fatal. Without a point from their opening two games, the Sounders now need a historic first win over European opposition to avoid crashing out empty-handed.

PSG’s path has also taken an unexpected twist. After a 4–0 victory over Atlético on matchday one, they stumbled against Botafogo in a shock 1–0 loss, the first South American win over a European side at the Club World Cup since 2012. A rotated PSG side took to the field that day, but with their tournament future now at risk, head coach Luis Enrique is expected to field a full-strength XI in search of a decisive result.

There’s no previous head-to-head history between the sides, and neither club has faced an opponent from the other’s continent in competitive action before.

Seattle’s recent form provides little optimism. The Sounders are on their worst losing run since 2019, having suffered four consecutive defeats. They have also failed to find the net in the first half of their last six matches, a trend they can ill afford to continue against a PSG side that, despite their slip-up, remains one of the most potent teams in world football.

PSG’s defeat to Botafogo snapped a 19-match streak in which they had scored at least once. Nevertheless, they remain the highest-scoring side among Europe’s top five leagues in 2025, having netted a remarkable 105 goals so far this calendar year. Their firepower, even with possible absences, remains formidable.

Key players could make the difference. Albert Rusnák, who scored Seattle’s lone goal against Atlético, has been one of their few bright spots, with six goals in his last ten appearances. For PSG, youngster Senny Mayulu continues to impress, tallying three goals and an assist in his last six outings, despite starting only two of those matches.

Team news sees Seattle still missing Stuart Hawkins and Paul Arriola, while PSG are expected to be without Ballon d’Or nominee Ousmane Dembélé for a third successive game.

From a betting perspective, PSG’s recent victories have all come with clean sheets, and with their clear status as favourites, backing them to win without conceding may offer value. However, with their confidence shaken and Seattle playing with nothing to lose, the contest may prove trickier than expected.

With knockout qualification on the line, the pressure is squarely on PSG. For Seattle, pride and history are at stake. One side looks to avoid embarrassment, the other to avoid a headline-making early exit.
