Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho’s potential involvement in the upcoming Under-20s World Cup for Argentina has hit a snag as the Red Devils are reportedly reluctant to let the promising 18-year-old forward participate in the competition.
According to reports, Garnacho’s absence could have a significant impact on Manchester United’s Premier League campaign, as well as their aspirations in the Europa League and the FA Cup.
United will be looking to secure a semi-final spot in the Europa League when they face off against Sevilla in the second leg of their quarter-final on Thursday, and will then take on Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday. However, if Garnacho features in the Under-20s World Cup, he will miss Man United’s last two Premier League games of the season against Bournemouth and Fulham, as well as a potential Europa League final and FA Cup final.
Despite an ankle problem sidelining him since mid-March, the young Argentinian has become a regular for United this season, featuring in 29 games across all competitions, registering five assists and scoring four goals.
Gaston Edul, a journalist, revealed that United’s management has informed Garnacho of their reluctance to release him for the World Cup, and it’s unlikely he will be allowed to participate. Although the Argentine federation and Under-20s manager Javier Mascherano will fight hard to have him available for the competition, it remains difficult.
Although Garnacho is on track to return from his injury soon, he will miss United’s Europa League match against Sevilla and the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton & Hove Albion. However, head coach Erik ten Hag reportedly views the young attacker as a crucial part of his plans moving forward and is expected to sign a new long-term contract at Old Trafford.
