Encouraging debut for Maltese cadets duo in San Marino

10 years old Daniel David Scicluna and Julia Bonnici were Malta’s representatives at the 31st edition of the Transalpine Trophy Mediterranean Cup held in San Marino over the weekend.

The event, open to U/12 athletes only, attracted the participation of no less than nine countries and several Italian regions with the Maltese duo finishing 16th out of 25 teams in the Mixed Team event. Following wins against Trentino and Emilia Romagna in the group phase, Scicluna and Bonnici moved into the Last 16 yet were eliminated and then went on to play in the classification matches.

In the group phase of the respective singles events, Bonnici managed one win and one loss while Scicluna suffered two losses with both players not progressing further. In the Plate event, both players clinched an additional win but were then eliminated in the quarter finals.

Both players were under the guidance of coach Mario Genovese.

Malta’s participation at this international event marked to start of a new ambitious long term development plan primarily focused on youth and was supported financially by the Maltese Olympic Committee.
