Manchester United hit with a setback as young talent Amad Diallo missed Sunday’s friendly against Borussia Dortmund due to a knee injury. The 21-year-old Ivorian, who impressed on loan at Sunderland last season, sustained the injury during a clash with Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber on the Red Devils’ US tour.
Initially, there were hopes that Diallo’s injury was not serious, and he even returned to the bench for the game against Real Madrid. However, the young attacker was once again sidelined for the match against Dortmund, prompting further assessment of his knee issue.
The severity of Diallo’s injury is yet to be determined, but it is undoubtedly frustrating for him as he looks to make his mark at Manchester United. After joining the club from Atalanta BC in 2021 for a fee of €21.3 million, he has only made nine appearances for the first team, scoring one goal and providing an assist.
Diallo’s absence adds to Manchester United’s injury concerns, as young talent Kobbie Mainoo is also out for the start of the 2023-24 season due to an ankle injury. Mainoo had shown promise during pre-season and was expected to have a breakthrough campaign with the first team.
In addition to Diallo and Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Raphael Varane also missed the game against Dortmund, although their absences were described as precautionary by the club.
Despite the injury setbacks, Manchester United managed to score first against Dortmund through Diogo Dalot, but Donyell Malen’s brace gave the Bundesliga side a 2-1 lead at half-time. Antony equalized for the Red Devils in the second half, but Youssoufa Moukoko’s goal secured a 3-2 victory for Dortmund.
Manchester United will now return to Old Trafford for a match against Lens on August 5, followed by their final exhibition game against Athletic Bilbao in Dublin. As the pre-season comes to a close, the club will be hoping for a swift recovery for Diallo and Mainoo to bolster their squad for the upcoming season.
