Ukraine clinch comeback win

UEFA Euro 2024 – Group E

Slovakia……1

Ukraine……..2

Ukraine staged a remarkable comeback in Group E, securing their first points and a 2-1 victory against Slovakia with goals from Mykola Shaparenko and Roman Yaremchuk in the second half. At half-time, Ukraine were trailing 1-0, but they dug deep and turned the tide to claim the win in UEFA EURO 2024 Group E.

Slovakia made a strong start, scoring within seven minutes on Matchday 1 and continuing to pose a threat in Düsseldorf. Lukáš Haraslín showed his skill with some impressive footwork on the edge of the box, forcing Anatoliy Trubin – who replaced Andriy Lunin – to make a save with his foot near the post.

Trubin made another outstanding stop moments later, denying Ivan Schranz from close range with his body. The Benfica goalkeeper justified his selection by also leaping to keep out a free-kick from Dávid Hancko. However, Slovakia’s persistent pressure paid off as Schranz found the back of the net, heading Haraslín’s cross into the ground and past Trubin.

Ukraine found themselves behind in every aspect – the scoreline, possession, and chances. However, they managed to rally themselves, with Artem Dovbyk twirling in the penalty area and attempting a shot that was blocked by Peter Pekarík. They came even closer when Oleksandr Tymchyk struck a low effort that beat Martin Dúbravka but hit the far post.

Oleksandr Zinchenko then tested Dúbravka with a well-placed set piece, while Haraslín forced Trubin to make a diving save to his left, maintaining the 1-0 scoreline at halftime. Slovakia deserved a bigger lead, but Ukraine held onto hope with their slim advantage. Shortly after the second half started, Mykola Shaparenko calmly side-footed the ball into the net following an impressive team play led by Mudryk.

This changed the dynamics of the game, and it was Serhiy Rebrov’s team that showed more energy as the match progressed. If Mudryk hitting the post wasn’t evidence enough, substitute Roman Yaremchuk showcased superb control as he received a long pass from Shaparenko and neatly tucked a shot past Dúbravka. Suddenly, Ukraine were on their way to victory and firmly back in contention for a spot in the knockout stage.
