Spanish footballers Alvaro Morata and Rodri have received one-game suspensions for their actions at a Euro 2024 presentation in Madrid last month, according to the governing body of European soccer.
On Wednesday, it was announced that the players will face disciplinary action for singing “Gibraltar is Spanish” during a public celebration in the Spanish capital on July 15, the day after their 2-1 victory over England in the European Championship final. Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located at the southern tip of Spain.
UEFA stated that the punishment was handed down due to the players’ failure to adhere to the general principles of conduct, violation of basic rules of decent behavior, use of sporting events for non-sporting purposes, and bringing the sport of football into disrepute. The ban will be effective for the next UEFA international match for which the players would otherwise be eligible.
