Former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard has been named manager of Coventry City on a two-and-a-half-year deal, the Championship side announced on Thursday. Lampard steps in for Mark Robins, who was dismissed earlier this month. Coventry currently sits 17th in the Championship table after 17 matches, having not secured a win in their last four outings.
“I am thrilled that Frank Lampard has chosen to lead our team as head coach. Frank is well-versed in the Championship and understands the requirements for success in this league,” stated club owner Doug King. As a player, Lampard netted 211 goals for Chelsea across all competitions over his illustrious 13-year career. He has previously managed Chelsea and Everton in the Premier League, along with Derby County in the Championship. His most recent managerial role was a brief spell back at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea’s interim manager during the 2022-23 season. Lampard’s first match in charge of Coventry will be this Saturday against Cardiff City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
The 46-year-old faces a significant challenge in succeeding the popular Robins, who guided Coventry from League Two to the Championship and held the title of the longest-serving manager in the English Football League with a tenure of seven years before his dismissal. Robins led Coventry to the Championship playoff final in 2023 and reached the FA Cup semi-finals last year, where they were defeated by Manchester United.
