With just 27 days to go, preparations for the 2026 LifeCycle Challenge are entering their final stage, with cyclists set to take on an extraordinary 2,000-kilometre journey across Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda over 10 consecutive days.
The riders have already completed more than 12 weeks of demanding preparation, with training now becoming increasingly intense as they prepare for the physical and mental challenges ahead. Two cyclists have already been medically discharged from the challenge, highlighting the difficulty of the undertaking.
Training sessions now include long early-morning rides, steep climbs and repeated circuits designed to test both endurance and mental strength.
One of the toughest days will come in Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” On day seven, the cyclists will cover more than 230 kilometres, including an eight-kilometre continuous climb.
Supporting kidney patients
The cyclists’ efforts will once again aim to raise funds for kidney patients in Malta. This year’s fundraising target will support a wishlist that includes:
- Medical equipment, including a convex scanner for transplant surgeons
- Medical research in collaboration with the RIDT at the University of Malta
- Advanced computer software used in transplant procedures
- A pilgrimage to Lourdes for renal patients and nurses
- Free gym and therapeutic sessions for patients
- Transport services for patients attending evening dialysis
Since its establishment in 1999, LifeCycle has raised more than €4 million to support kidney research and essential services for renal patients in Malta.
For the first time, LifeCycle has also launched a public crowdfunding campaign, giving members of the public the opportunity to contribute directly to this year’s fundraising effort.
The campaign is now officially underway as the cyclists enter the final weeks of preparation before embarking on their demanding African adventure.
