Danish rider Mikkel Honoré is in intensive care after suffering serious injuries in a horrific crash during the Heistse Pijl one-day race in Belgium on Saturday.
Ken Vanmarcke, sports director at Honoré’s team EF Education-EasyPost, spoke about the extent of his injuries. “He crashed very violently and is still in the hospital’s intensive care unit. Mikkel is stable, but he has broken seven ribs, three vertebrae, and his collarbone. He has also suffered a punctured lung. It is a serious injury and it will be a long rehabilitation,” he said.
The 29-year-old has been with EF Education-EasyPost since 2021. In a bittersweet twist, his teammate Noah Hobbs went on to win the race shortly after the crash, though Vanmarcke admitted it was impossible to celebrate in the circumstances. “You can’t celebrate if someone is moaning in pain,” he said.
Everyone in cycling will be wishing Mikkel Honoré a full and speedy recovery.
