RB Leipzig have appointed Martin Demichelis as their new head coach on a contract running until June 2028.
The German club announced the appointment on Monday. Demichelis replaces Ole Werner, who was sacked last week, even though Leipzig finished third in the Bundesliga last season and qualified for next season’s Champions League.
Demichelis becomes RB Leipzig’s eighth permanent manager since the club reached the Bundesliga in the 2016–17 season.
The 45-year-old Argentine started his coaching career as an assistant at Malaga and also worked with Bayern Munich’s youth teams. His first senior management job was at his former club River Plate in the 2022–23 season, where he led them to the Argentine league title.
Most recently, he managed Spanish side Mallorca after joining in February until the end of the season. Although he achieved five wins and an eight-match unbeaten run, he could not stop the club from being relegated from La Liga.
Demichelis said he was excited to join Leipzig, describing it as an ambitious club with a clear identity and talented players. He also said he was looking forward to leading the team in the Champions League and competing against Europe’s top clubs.
As a player, Demichelis spent most of his career at Bayern Munich, making 259 appearances and winning four Bundesliga titles and four German Cups.
He also played for River Plate, Malaga, Atletico Madrid, Espanyol and Manchester City, winning the Premier League with Manchester City in 2014. He played 51 times for Argentina and was part of the team that finished runners-up at the 2014 World Cup.
