Malta claim historic first win in Euro Beach Soccer League

Malta’s national beach soccer team celebrated a historic moment on Friday, securing their first-ever victory in the Euro Beach Soccer League with a 3-2 win over Norway in Division B.

The match, played at the Stabia Beach Arena in Castellammare di Stabia, marked a significant milestone for Maltese beach soccer. Under the guidance of Coach Marco Casarsa, Malta capitalised on a key turning point in the second period when Norway’s Amund Haaland Aano was shown a red card. Moments later, Lee Joe Schembri broke the deadlock, giving Malta the lead.

The momentum continued to swing Malta’s way as Daryl Micallef quickly doubled the advantage, sending Casarsa’s side into the third period with a 2-0 lead. Early in the final period, Micallef struck again to make it 3-0, giving Malta what seemed like a comfortable cushion.

Norway, however, mounted a late comeback, reducing the deficit through goals from Andreas Skotheimsvik and Sebastian Haga. Despite the pressure, Malta’s defence held firm in the closing stages, ensuring a memorable 3-2 victory.

Malta will now look to build on this historic achievement when they face Romania on Saturday at 12:30, before taking on Kazakhstan in their final match of the mini-tournament on Sunday at 11:15.
