The coach of the Spanish basketball team, Sergio Scariolo, after the victory over Finland 100:90 in the quarter-finals of the Eurobasket, especially touched on the game of Rudy Fernandez.
“Many people ask me if Rudy will retire from the national team after this championship, and I tell them that I don’t know because Rudy is playing his best championship so far in the national team. Why would you stop? If someone likes to play it safe, they would accept a retreat, but that’s not Rudy. I expect him to continue playing for the national team and to enjoy it, provided he is healthy. This is now a new experience – he has never had a role like this in any team before,” said Sergio Scariolo.
The captain of Spain finished the match with Finland with 11 points and five steals in 18 minutes on the court, and his two three-pointers in the finish practically put an end to the match.
“He’s amazing – his back hurts, his neck hurts, his knee hurts, everything hurts, but he’s not afraid. He throws himself on the floor to steal the ball like he’s 18 years old. He leads his teammates by personal example, proving himself as a leader in difficult moments. In the match against Lithuania, we probably used him too much, he spent the whole next day on the ice”, said Scariolo.
In the semi-finals, Spain will play against Germany, which knocked out the Greek team.
