Starlites 2nd Division team continued their outstanding season by securing the BOV Basketball Amateur Knockout title, adding to their earlier triumph in the John Tabone Amateur Shield. They delivered a commanding 68-46 victory over Depiro Hoops, cementing their dominance in the competition.
The Starlites got off to a fast start, opening a 12-6 lead within the first three minutes. However, Depiro responded with an impressive 10-point run, edging ahead 16-12 as the clock ticked down in the first quarter. Not to be outdone, the Starlites clawed back with six unanswered points, including a crucial three-pointer from L. Riolo, to close the session with an 18-16 advantage.
In the second quarter, Alex Sultana came to the fore, scoring the first five points to extend the Starlites’ lead to 23-16. His dominance under the offensive boards helped maintain their momentum, giving the Starlites a 36-26 advantage at halftime. Depiro struggled to find their rhythm, relying on long-range shots that failed to close the gap.
The third quarter saw the Starlites increase their intensity, capitalizing on Depiro’s defensive lapses to stretch their lead to 58-42. The final session was a masterclass in game management by the Starlites, who maintained control and capitalized on numerous unforced errors from Depiro. By the final whistle, the Starlites had sealed an emphatic 68-46 victory.
The BOV Basketball Amateur Knockout Trophy was presented to Starlites’ captain Miguel Falzon by Ernest Agius, Chief Officer at Bank of Valletta, and Paul Sultana, President of the Malta Basketball Association.
