The Mustangs were crowned 2026 Malta National Baseball League champions after defeating the Mellieħa Northenders 5-3 in a dramatic winner-takes-all Game 7 to clinch the championship series.
After a season that came down to the final game, the Mustangs delivered when it mattered most, overcoming a late Northenders rally to secure the title in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
Kevin Spiteri got the start on the mound for the champions and produced a composed performance across four innings, allowing just one earned run. Andres Susarra then stepped in as relief pitcher and successfully closed out the contest despite facing significant pressure in the final inning.
Mellieħa relied on Keith Bartolo as their starting pitcher, with the experienced hurler completing five innings while conceding three earned runs. Michael Bartolo took over in the sixth inning but was unable to prevent the Mustangs from extending their lead.
The champions made the perfect start in the bottom of the first inning. Gabriel Di Sabatino reached base on a walk before advancing on a passed ball. Jan Harm Visser then delivered a timely single to bring home the opening run and give the Mustangs an early advantage.
The Northenders responded in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, they levelled the score through a clutch RBI single. However, the Mustangs defence stood firm and prevented any further damage during the inning.
The decisive response came in the fifth. Kevin Spiteri helped his own cause with an RBI triple before later crossing home plate during a rundown situation to restore and then extend the Mustangs’ lead to 3-1.
The champions added further breathing space in the sixth inning when Andres Susarra produced a crucial two RBI single with the bases loaded, pushing the score to 5-1.
Mellieħa refused to surrender and launched a final comeback attempt in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Susarra struck out the first batter before Carmelo Martini drove in a run with a single. Steven Grima then added another run through a ground ball.
The tension continued until the final moments as another run crossed the plate during a rundown play. However, the Mustangs eventually recorded the decisive out to spark celebrations and secure the 2026 Malta National Baseball League championship.
The victory completes a memorable campaign for the Mustangs, who held their nerve in the decisive Game 7 to emerge as champions after one of the most competitive finals series in recent Maltese baseball history.
