Mellieħa AC’s Joelle Cortis and Dillon Cassar are the winners of the 2023-2024 Road Running Series, a three-legged competition hosted by Athletics Malta, while Evolve Endurance Club claimed the Club title in both male and female category.
Cortis and Cassar made sure of winning the overall Series after a fine win in the final event, a 5km race around Ta’ Qali, which was also valid as the 5km road-running National Championship. For both Mellieħa athletes, this victory ensured a double victory following their victory in the 10km earlier this year.
In today’s race, Cassar was the only athlete to dip below 15 minutes, closing in 14:50 ahead of St Patrick’s Simon Spiteri (15:03) and Evolve’s Gabriel Farrugia in 15:05.
In the overall classification, Dillon Cassar (Mellieħa AC) claimed the Series, ahead of Shaun Galea and Gabriel Farrugia, both of Evolve Endurance Club.
Among the women, Cortis made it three out of three winning the 5km race in 18:05 ahead of
Rosalie Borg (Pembroke – 18:21) and Kimberly-Anne Gauci (Evolve – 18:31). Today’s three positions on the podium reflected the final classification in the Series.
Despite Mellieħa’s double in the individual classification, it was Evolve Endurance Club who emerged victorious in the Clubs’ Series, in both male and female categories, thanks to a better classification of their top athletes overall. Mellieħa ended up in second position in both categories, with La Salle AC taking the third spot among the men.
At the end of the road race in Ta’ Qali, which followed a route certified by World Athletics, trophies were presented by Athletics Malta President Aldrin Cassar, members of the Executive Committee and members of the subcommittee responsible for the organisation of the Road Running Series which attracted more than 100 athletes.
