Keely Hodgkinson Crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year

In a stellar year for British sport, Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson has capped off her incredible season by being voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year, edging out darts prodigy Luke Littler and England cricketer Joe Root in a public vote.

At just 22 years old, Hodgkinson delivered one of the standout performances at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, securing a stunning gold medal in the women’s 800m and cementing her place as one of Britain’s most exciting athletic talents. The victory marked her ascent to the sport’s top, following her silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Hodgkinson’s year has been nothing short of remarkable. Alongside her Olympic triumph, she successfully defended her European Athletics Championship title in Rome in June, showcasing her consistency and dominance on the track.

Reflecting on her achievements, Hodgkinson said:

“I am in a bit of shock. I am more excited for my coach as I wouldn’t be here without his guidance. This year has been incredible, and I achieved everything I set out to do on the outdoor track. I hope you loved watching Paris.”

The Wigan-born athlete has been praised not only for her physical prowess but also for her tactical brilliance in races, often delivering perfectly timed finishes that leave her opponents trailing.

Hodgkinson’s win continues a trend of British female athletes dominating the Sports Personality of the Year award. She follows in the footsteps of tennis sensation Emma Raducanu, Lionesses star Beth Mead, and England goalkeeper Mary Earps, making it four consecutive wins for female sports stars.

Her victory is also a testament to the growing prominence of women’s sport in the UK, with Hodgkinson’s achievements inspiring a new generation of athletes.

While Hodgkinson took the top prize, 17-year-old darts phenom Luke Littler came in second, winning hearts with his fearless performances and rapid rise through the ranks. Littler, already one of the sport’s youngest stars, has been tipped as the future of darts and a potential world champion in the making.

England cricketing great Joe Root finished third, earning recognition for his exceptional performances with the bat during the year. Root was instrumental in England’s thrilling summer of cricket, including his starring role in the Ashes series. His blend of leadership and skill continues to make him one of the most respected figures in the game.

The competition for this year’s award was fierce, with a shortlist that also included Jude Bellingham, the 21-year-old England and Real Madrid midfielder who has taken the football world by storm. Despite missing out on the top three, Bellingham’s exploits for both club and country in 2024 earned him widespread acclaim.

With her latest accolade, Hodgkinson has firmly established herself as a household name in British sport. Her achievements in 2024 will not only be remembered for their significance on the track but also for their impact on inspiring young athletes across the nation.

As she looks ahead to future challenges, including the 2025 World Championships, Hodgkinson remains focused on continuing her journey as one of athletics’ brightest stars.

In a year packed with unforgettable sporting moments, Keely Hodgkinson has proven that she is more than deserving of the title BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024. The sky is the limit for this incredible talent.
