Keely Hodgkinson and Audrey Werro are set for a highly anticipated women’s 800m final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
Olympic champion Hodgkinson produced a controlled performance in her semi-final, leading from the front before winning in 1:57.38 to secure her place in Friday’s final.
Werro endured a far more dramatic route through. The Swiss athlete fell following contact during her semi-final and initially finished outside the qualifying places.
However, officials reviewed the incident and reinstated Werro following an appeal, keeping alive the prospect of a major showdown for the European title.
Dutch athlete Femke Broeders-Bol is also among the leading contenders, while Britain’s Jemma Reekie booked her place after winning the other semi-final.
The women’s 800m final is expected to be one of the highlights of the closing stages of the championships.
