As part of Athletics Malta’s efforts to invest in younger athletes and support their devlopment in the sport, building up from the success of Team Malta at GSSE 2023, a group of 30 athletes joined the first ever National Youth Development Training Camp in Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy.
The group forms part of the Youth Development Scheme, supported by the Maltese Olympic Committee. The scheme was setup at the beginning of the year, with selected athletes being chosen on the basis of the best performances throughout the previous season.
This project has been established through a collective effort of the Technical Directors, Mario Bonello and Kevin Galea, together with the appointed foreign Technical Director, Prof. Antonio Laguardia.
This week-long camp in Italy focused on several aspects associated with athletic development, including the technical, physical, psychological, and socio-emotional aspects of the athlete. Several national sessions and meetings have taken place with these young athletes, allowing leading coaches to unite and lead training. Focus on better mobility, technical running, throwing, and scientific tests took place.
The Maltese athletes were accompanied by coaches Matthew Croker, Luca Falzon, Tiziana Zammit and Brenda Muscat.
The association will continue investing further resources to the Youth Development Scheme, with the support of the Maltese Olympic Committee, with the list of participating athletes to be reviewed at the end of each year.
