The President of Centro Caribe Sports, Luis Mejía Oviedo, addressed the global sports media community during the third day of the 87th AIPS Congress in Rabat, sharing the progress being made in the Central American and Caribbean region through sport-led initiatives.
Speaking to more than 100 journalists from around the world via video link, Mejía Oviedo presented “Huellas,” a flagship project developed by Centro Caribe Sports. The initiative centres on documenting the journey of athletes in the region as they prepare for international competitions, with a unique perspective provided by young sports reporters.
“Huellas,” which translates to “footprints,” serves not only as a platform for storytelling but also as a training ground for aspiring sports journalists across Latin America and the Caribbean. The project aims to elevate the standards of sports journalism while giving visibility to the dedication and challenges faced by athletes in their pursuit of excellence.
To illustrate the success of the initiative, Mejía Oviedo showcased a printed magazine focusing on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, alongside a video presentation highlighting the performances of regional athletes. Both productions were created by the young journalists involved in the programme.
In his remarks, Mejía Oviedo expressed gratitude to the International Sports Press Association for its continued collaboration. He acknowledged AIPS as a key partner in efforts to develop sport across the continent, crediting the association’s support with enabling meaningful progress.
He also praised the dedication of sports journalists, noting their vital role in advancing media and promoting achievements in sport. Mejía Oviedo emphasised the importance of nurturing future generations and commended the efforts being made to prepare them for the challenges ahead.
Concluding his address, the Centro Caribe Sports President called for greater unity among sports journalists. He urged members of the international press community to work together to develop their skills and strengthen the foundations of sports media for the benefit of future athletes and storytellers alike.
