Former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba says he is ready to help Tanzania develop its sports sector, especially football, as the country prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Drogba visited Tanzania and spoke with President Samia Suluhu Hassan about how he could support preparations for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The President asked Drogba to act as an ambassador for the 2027 AFCON during their meeting in Dodoma.
A government spokesperson said Drogba’s experience would help improve sports facilities and support young athletes.
Drogba said he was honoured by the invitation and happy to help Tanzania’s sporting plans.
He also encouraged young people to focus on education as well as football, saying education is important for long-term success.
He explained that his own education helped him in case his football career had not worked out.
Drogba said there are many careers in sport, not just playing, such as coaching, management, and stadium work.

He also praised Tanzania’s investment in sport and said the industry can create many jobs.
The 2027 AFCON will be the first time the tournament is hosted by three countries: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
