The winners of Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain will receive commemorative championship rings, FIFA has announced.
The rings are a new addition to the tournament and follow a tradition that is well established in American sport, where championship-winning teams are often presented with special rings to celebrate their success.
FIFA will produce 30 rings for the World Cup-winning squad. Each ring will feature a miniature World Cup trophy and a special engraving inside the band. In addition, 1,996 replica rings will be made available for supporters to purchase.
The World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will also be attended by United States President Donald Trump, who is expected to present the trophy to the winning team.
Trump has not attended any matches during the tournament so far, including the United States’ campaign, which ended with a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino had previously confirmed that Trump would attend the final, while the White House has also announced his presence.
Trump’s relationship with FIFA has attracted attention during the tournament after he reportedly contacted Infantino to request a review of the suspension given to United States striker Folarin Balogun following his red card.
The decision to overturn Balogun’s automatic suspension was widely criticised, with some questioning the fairness of the process. Balogun was allowed to play against Belgium, but the United States were comfortably beaten.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain will take place on Sunday, with both nations aiming to lift football’s biggest prize for the first time since 2022 and 2010 respectively.
