Spain are through to the FIFA World Cup final for only the second time in their history after producing an outstanding performance to defeat France 2-0 in the semi-final.
La Roja’s only previous appearance in the final came in 2010, when they defeated the Netherlands to lift the trophy in South Africa. Sixteen years later, Spain will now have the opportunity to become world champions for a second time.
France entered the contest among the tournament favourites, but Luis de la Fuente’s side controlled the match with greater composure, intensity and technical quality. Spain restricted France’s dangerous attacking players while repeatedly finding spaces through their own quick passing and movement.
The opening stages were competitive, with both teams attempting to establish control in midfield. France looked to release Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé quickly, while Spain remained patient in possession and used Lamine Yamal to stretch the French defence.
The decisive opening arrived in the 22nd minute. Yamal drove into the penalty area and was brought down by Lucas Digne, prompting the referee to award Spain a penalty after the decision was checked. Mikel Oyarzabal stepped forward and calmly beat Mike Maignan to give La Roja a deserved lead.
France attempted to respond before the interval, but Spain’s midfield, led by Rodri, continued to control the rhythm of the game. Mbappé struggled to find space, while Michael Olise and Dembélé were unable to make a consistent impact against a well-organised Spanish defence.
Spain carried the same authority into the second half and doubled their lead in the 58th minute following a superb team move.
Dani Olmo carried the ball through the centre before the move was worked towards Pedro Porro on the right. The full-back exchanged passes with Olmo, broke into the penalty area and guided a composed finish beyond Maignan into the bottom corner.
Didier Deschamps made several changes as France searched for a route back into the match, but Spain remained disciplined. Unai Simón dealt with the limited danger that came his way, while France’s late attempts lacked the precision required to seriously threaten a comeback.
Spain saw out the closing stages with confidence and maturity, completing a deserved victory over a French side that had arrived at the semi-final with serious hopes of lifting the trophy.
La Roja will now contest the final on Sunday, 19 July, at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford. They will face the winners of the second semi-final between Argentina and England.
After returning to the biggest match in international football for the first time since 2010, Spain are now one victory away from adding a second star to their shirt.
