South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The South African Sports Ministry confirmed Adams’ passing on Saturday, while his family appealed for privacy during this difficult time. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of death, and an investigation is ongoing.
Adams had been one of the key figures in South Africa’s historic World Cup campaign, helping Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stages of the competition for the first time. He featured in all three group-stage matches before South Africa’s Round of 32 elimination against Canada.
The midfielder enjoyed a remarkable rise through South African football after emerging from the Stellenbosch FC academy. He made more than 130 senior appearances for the club before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he quickly established himself as one of the country’s leading midfielders.
During his time with Sundowns, Adams helped the club win the CAF Champions League and continued to cement his place in the national team. Since making his South Africa debut in 2022, he earned 13 international caps and scored twice in FIFA World Cup qualifying.
