Salah returns to Egypt training ahead of Australia clash

Egypt have received a major boost ahead of their World Cup last-32 match against Australia, with captain Mohamed Salah returning to training after a hamstring scare.

The 34-year-old took part in part of Tuesday’s session as he continues his recovery from the injury suffered during Egypt’s 1-1 draw against Iran in their final group match.

Salah’s substitution in that game had raised doubts over his availability for Friday’s knockout tie in Dallas, but images shared by the Egyptian Football Association showed the forward smiling back on the pitch in Spokane, with the caption: “The King is back.”

His return is a timely lift for Egypt, who reached the knockout stage for the first time after finishing second in their group with five points, behind Belgium on goal difference.

Salah has again been central to Egypt’s campaign, contributing one goal and two assists so far in the tournament.

Australia will still test Egypt physically and tactically, but Salah’s presence, even if not yet confirmed for a full match, changes the mood around Hossam Hassan’s squad.

With a place in the last 16 at stake, Egypt will now hope their captain can complete his recovery in time for one of the biggest matches in the country’s World Cup history.
