England will be without defenders Jarell Quansah and Reece James for Wednesday’s FIFA World Cup last-32 clash against DR Congo after both failed to recover from injury in time for the knockout encounter.
The defensive duo did not take part in Tuesday’s training session, with head coach Thomas Tuchel confirming they are close to returning but not yet ready for selection.
Quansah is slightly ahead in his recovery after suffering a twisted ankle during England’s 2-0 victory over Panama in the final group-stage match, while James continues to recover from the hamstring injury he picked up against Ghana.
Tuchel said both players are progressing well and should be available if England advance further in the tournament, stressing that the priority is ensuring they are fully fit rather than rushing them back.
Their absence leaves England short of options at right-back, with Djed Spence expected to continue in the role, although the versatile Ezri Konsa is also available as an alternative.
The injuries have renewed debate over the balance of England’s World Cup squad, particularly following Tino Livramento’s withdrawal before the tournament with a calf injury. Defender Trevoh Chalobah was drafted in as his replacement, while Trent Alexander-Arnold was not included in Tuchel’s final squad despite being available.
