Competition: FIFA World Cup 2026 – Round of 16
Two Iberian giants collide in arguably the biggest fixture of the World Cup Round of 16 as Portugal and Spain battle for a place in the quarter-finals.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal survived a dramatic late scare against Croatia, while Spain comfortably swept aside Austria to continue their impressive tournament.
Match Preview
Portugal’s place in the last 16 was secured in dramatic fashion.
Roberto Martinez’s side thought they were heading to extra time against Croatia after Josko Gvardiol appeared to equalise deep into stoppage time. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside, sending the Portuguese bench into wild celebrations.
Cristiano Ronaldo had earlier opened the scoring with his first-ever World Cup knockout goal before Goncalo Ramos added a second.
The victory also ended an unwanted record, with Portugal winning a World Cup knockout match after trailing for the first time since 1966.
However, recent history suggests the Selecao have often struggled to make deep runs in major tournaments, having exited at the Round of 16 in both the 2010 and 2018 World Cups.
Spain, meanwhile, look increasingly like genuine contenders to lift the trophy.
La Roja eased past Austria 3-0 thanks to a Pedro Porro strike and a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal, extending their winning run at the tournament to three matches.

Perhaps most impressively, Spain remain one of only two teams left in the competition yet to concede a goal, alongside co-hosts Mexico.
Luis de la Fuente’s side have struck the perfect balance between attacking flair and defensive solidity and enter the knockout clash full of confidence.
Spain also hold the historical advantage in this fixture, losing just seven of their previous 41 meetings with Portugal.

Team News
Portugal have no injury concerns ahead of the clash and Roberto Martinez is expected to stick with the side that defeated Croatia.
Cristiano Ronaldo should once again lead the line despite being substituted against Croatia, while Goncalo Ramos remains an excellent option from the bench.

The only real selection dilemma is on the right wing, where Pedro Neto faces competition from Bernardo Silva and Francisco Conceicao.
Spain also have a largely healthy squad.
Lamine Yamal, Pedro Porro, Dani Olmo and Aymeric Laporte all had their workloads managed in training but are expected to be available.
However, Yeremy Pino and Nico Williams remain doubts and could miss the encounter.
Luis de la Fuente is unlikely to make many changes following Spain’s impressive victory over Austria.
Predicted Lineups
Portugal (4-2-3-1)
Diogo Costa; Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias, Renato Veiga, Nuno Mendes; Vitinha, Joao Neves; Pedro Neto, Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao; Cristiano Ronaldo.
Spain (4-2-3-1)
Unai Simon; Pedro Porro, Pau Cubarsi, Aymeric Laporte, Marc Cucurella; Rodri, Pedri; Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Alex Baena; Mikel Oyarzabal.

Players to Watch
- 🇵🇹 Cristiano Ronaldo – Chasing what could be his final World Cup and still capable of producing decisive moments.
- 🇵🇹 Bruno Fernandes – Portugal’s creative leader and biggest source of invention.
- 🇪🇸 Lamine Yamal – One of the tournament’s standout players and a constant threat down the right.
- 🇪🇸 Mikel Oyarzabal – In exceptional form and coming off a brace against Austria.
Head-to-Head
Spain have enjoyed the better of this rivalry over the years, losing only seven of their previous 41 meetings with Portugal.
However, Portugal did defeat Spain on penalties in the UEFA Nations League final in 2025.

Malta Sport Prediction
This feels like a match that could easily go the distance.
Portugal have enough quality to trouble anyone, especially with the experience of Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, but Spain have arguably been the most complete team at the tournament.
La Roja’s defensive record has been exceptional and their midfield control could prove decisive against a Portuguese side that has occasionally looked vulnerable.
