The scenes inside MetLife Stadium on Sunday were difficult to witness, with several Brazil fans reduced to tears in the closing stages and many heading for the exits early in a clear sign of resignation.
Brazil’s World Cup campaign came to a disappointing end with a 2-1 defeat to Norway, marking the nation’s earliest exit from the tournament since being eliminated in the Round of 16 in 1990.
The final whistle sparked emotional scenes among the Brazilian players. Veteran forward Neymar, who scored Brazil’s only goal and was likely making his final World Cup appearance, was visibly devastated. Teenage striker Endrick was equally overcome with emotion, collapsing to his knees before being comforted by teammates.
Although the match was played in the United States, the atmosphere largely favoured Brazil. Around 80 per cent of the crowd at MetLife Stadium wore the famous yellow shirts, reflecting both the travelling support and the large Brazilian community in New Jersey. In contrast, Norway’s supporters occupied only small sections of the stadium.
After the defeat, head coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted his side had fallen short and acknowledged the need for fresh ideas moving forward.
Brazil once again struggled to produce the free-flowing football traditionally associated with the five-time world champions. They created few clear opportunities during a hard-fought first half, while Vinícius Júnior found little space to influence proceedings.
One of the game’s key moments came when Bruno Guimarães missed a first-half penalty after Ancelotti opted not to let Vinícius take the spot-kick. Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland made the save and later described it as a turning point that gave his side confidence.
Ancelotti defended his decision by explaining it was based on statistical analysis, believing Guimarães was the strongest penalty option available at that stage of the match.
Norway increased the pressure after the interval with an aggressive pressing game that forced Brazil onto the back foot. Seeking a response, Ancelotti introduced Endrick in the 58th minute, a substitution many felt should have come earlier after the teenager had seen limited playing time throughout the tournament.
Endrick made an immediate impact, racing onto a through ball from Vinícius just moments after coming on, only to fire narrowly wide. His introduction briefly lifted both Brazil and their supporters before Neymar entered the contest to add creativity in attack.
Despite their late surge, Brazil could not find an equaliser as Norway held firm to secure a famous victory and send the South American giants crashing out of the tournament.
Norway’s Erling Haaland made a leap over his Premier League nemesis Gabriel Magalhães to tap in a header from a cross in the 79th minute to give Norway the lead. He followed up in the 90th minute with a one-touch wonder that found the back of the net, squashing Brazil’s hopes.
In hindsight, Ancelotti said, it’s “very evident” that Brazil’s midfield is an issue.
“I think we have to move some players,” he said. “We need some young talent. We need some high-level players coming into Brazilian football to be able to play for the national team in the future.”
The energy in the locker room was tough, according to Ancelotti, who thanked his players for their hard work. But in sports, he said, it’s not always going to go your way.
“We’re going to manage it,” Ancelotti said. “We’re going to take this defeat, and we’re going to use it as fuel for the new … new cycle moving forward.”
