Morocco face injury worries ahead of World Cup opener

Morocco have been dealt an injury scare just days before their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Brazil.

Key players Abdessamad Ezzalzouli and Noussair Mazraoui were both forced off during Morocco’s 1-1 draw with Norway in their final warm-up fixture before the tournament. Ezzalzouli suffered a leg injury and was replaced at half-time, while Mazraoui left the field after 29 minutes with a shoulder problem.

Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi admitted there was concern over the pair’s fitness but was otherwise encouraged by his side’s performance against strong opposition.

Morocco took an early lead through Brahim Diaz before Norway captain Martin Odegaard equalised in the second half.

The Atlas Lions, who reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, begin their Group C campaign against Brazil in New York on 13 June, with Scotland and Haiti also in the group.
