Tottenham transfer target Jan Paul van Hecke is due to undergo further assessment by the Dutch national team’s medical staff on Monday after suffering severe swelling around his right eye during Holland’s 2-2 World Cup draw against Japan in Dallas.
The injury was caused by a kick to the face, with the swelling worsening throughout the second half. Images showing the extent of the bruising as Van Hecke greeted family members in the stands after the match have sparked additional concern.
The defender later admitted that the injury affected his vision.
“He kicked me in the eye with full force,” Van Hecke explained. “I was going for the header, so I knew there could be contact.
“At one point it definitely affected my vision. I can’t see very well on that side at the moment. Hopefully it improves over the next few days. I think the swelling will increase a bit more later, but that’s part of football.”
Although it remains unclear exactly when the incident occurred, Van Hecke was able to complete the full 90 minutes as Ronald Koeman’s side surrendered the lead twice in their Group F opener.
The 26-year-old Brighton defender, who is approaching the final year of his current contract, also reflected on Holland’s performance, suggesting his side should have pressed higher up the pitch after Crysencio Summerville restored their advantage during the match.
