Manuel Neuer is set to make a sensational return to the international stage after Julian Nagelsmann confirmed that the veteran goalkeeper will lead Germany’s charge at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision comes as a major surprise given that Neuer had retired from international football in 2024, seemingly bringing an end to one of the greatest international careers in modern football. Instead, the 40-year-old will now head into what will remarkably be his fifth World Cup tournament as Germany attempts to rebuild their international reputation following years of disappointment on the global stage.
Nagelsmann made his intentions immediately clear during the squad announcement in Frankfurt, confirming that Neuer would return not merely as part of the squad but as Germany’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Oliver Baumann.

The German coach stressed that Neuer’s leadership, personality, and experience remain invaluable in tournament football, particularly for a national team still attempting to recover from successive World Cup disasters.
Germany’s decline since lifting the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 has been dramatic. The four-time world champions suffered humiliating group stage exits both in Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, while their performances at the European Championship level have also fallen below traditional expectations.
Ironically, Neuer remains the final surviving member of that 2014 World Cup-winning squad still involved at the international level. His recall, therefore, represents more than just a footballing decision; it is also symbolic of Germany attempting to reconnect with a winning mentality which has gradually disappeared over the last decade.
Despite concerns surrounding his age and recurring calf problems, Neuer has still shown flashes of his world-class quality with FC Bayern Munich this season. His performances in Europe, particularly against Real Madrid, reminded many observers that even at 40 years old, he remains capable of performing on football’s biggest occasions.
Nagelsmann’s squad selection also reflects a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talent. Joshua Kimmich will retain the captaincy despite Neuer’s return, while attacking stars such as Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Florian Wirtz, and Leroy Sane are expected to carry much of Germany’s creative responsibility.

There was also room for emerging talents, including 18-year-old Lennart Karl, while several established names surprisingly missed out, including Serge Gnabry through injury and experienced striker Niclas Fullkrug.
Germany will head into the tournament under pressure to restore national pride after a decade of underachievement. The Germans have been drawn in Group C alongside the Curacao national football team, the Ivory Coast national football team, and the Ecuador national football team.
Before travelling to North America, Germany will play one final home fixture against Finland national football team on May 31 before taking on co-hosts the United States men’s national soccer team in Chicago on June 6.
Whether Neuer’s dramatic return proves to be an inspired masterstroke or a nostalgic gamble remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that Germany are once again turning to one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time in the hope that he can help lead them back to the summit of world football.
