From baby photos to World Cup rivals: Messi and Yamal set for historic final

Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal are set to write another remarkable chapter in football history when Argentina face Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

The occasion carries a unique story that stretches back almost two decades. In 2007, a young Messi took part in a charity calendar photoshoot organised by Diario Sport and UNICEF, where he posed with a baby during a fundraising campaign. That baby was Lamine Yamal.

At the time, Messi was an emerging Barcelona star beginning what would become one of the greatest careers in football history. Yamal, meanwhile, was only a few months old, with no hint that he would one day become one of the game’s brightest talents.

Now, 19 years later, the pair are preparing to meet on the biggest stage in world football.

Messi, 39, has guided defending champions Argentina back to another World Cup final, while Yamal has played a pivotal role in Spain’s impressive run to the showpiece match.

The image of Messi gently holding baby Yamal has resurfaced in recent years and become one of football’s most iconic photographs. It has taken on even greater significance as Yamal has developed into one of the sport’s standout young stars.

Sunday’s final will not simply be a meeting between two outstanding footballers. It will symbolise the passing of the torch between generations, with one of the greatest players of all time facing the player many believe could shape football’s future.

Regardless of the result, the story of Messi and Yamal has already become one of the most extraordinary narratives in World Cup history.
