France continue their World Cup campaign with a chance to secure an early place in the knockout stages when they face Iraq in Philadelphia. After opening their tournament with a 3-1 victory over Senegal, Didier Deschamps’ side will be aiming to maintain their strong record of winning their first two matches at major tournaments.
Although France were not at their best in the opening half against Senegal, they improved after the break and eventually controlled the game. Captain Kylian Mbappé once again made the difference, scoring twice to become France’s all-time leading goalscorer. With attacking options across the pitch and a fully fit squad available, Les Bleus will enter this match as clear favourites.
Iraq, meanwhile, are hoping to respond after a difficult return to the World Cup stage. Their first appearance at the tournament since 1986 ended in a 4-1 defeat to Norway, despite showing encouraging moments in the first half. That result leaves them under pressure heading into this fixture, knowing another defeat would seriously damage their chances of reaching the knockout rounds.
There are reasons for Iraq to remain positive. Their recent draw against Spain in a pre-tournament friendly showed they can compete against strong opposition, and they have produced some disciplined performances against European teams in recent years. They will likely look to stay compact defensively and make the most of counter-attacks and set-piece opportunities.
France’s attacking quality and tournament experience make them favourites to take all three points, but Iraq will hope to frustrate their opponents and keep their World Cup hopes alive heading into the final group match.
