Calls have been made for FIFA to investigate Argentina’s behaviour during and after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final following their 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain.
Several incidents from the final at MetLife Stadium have come under scrutiny, with criticism directed at Argentina’s conduct both on and off the pitch.
Among the moments highlighted were Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernández appealing for Spain defender Marc Cucurella to be sent off before Fernández himself was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card late in normal time.
Attention has also focused on Leandro Paredes following his involvement in confrontations with Spain players Eric Garcia and Gavi after the final whistle. Nahuel Molina has also been criticised after allegedly striking Spain midfielder Rodri during the match.
Further criticism was aimed at members of Argentina’s coaching staff, while some players were also accused of turning their backs as Spain made their way to the podium to lift the World Cup trophy.

The criticism was made in an opinion article by football reporter Ryan Taylor for the Daily Mirror, who argued that FIFA should consider disciplinary action over the incidents and claimed Argentina’s behaviour overshadowed the end of their World Cup title defence.
The article also pointed out that Argentina failed to register a shot until the closing stages of extra time, with Spain dominating much of the final before Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 106th minute.

FIFA has not announced any disciplinary action regarding the incidents at the time of writing.
