Egypt make history with penalty shootout victory over Australia

FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 – ROUND OF 32

AUSTRALIA……1 (2)

EGYPT……….…1 (4)

Egypt made history by reaching the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Dallas.

The Pharaohs took the lead in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour headed home Karim Hafez’s cross at the far post. Egypt controlled much of the first half, enjoying more possession and limiting Australia to very few chances.

Australia found their equaliser early in the second half after Mohamed Hany accidentally turned a dangerous free-kick into his own net. Both sides pushed for a winner, with Egypt coming closest late in normal time, but excellent defending and goalkeeping ensured the match went into extra time.

Neither team was able to break the deadlock during the additional 30 minutes, sending the tie to a penalty shootout.

Australia’s Harry Souttar missed the opening penalty, handing Egypt an early advantage. Mohamed Salah confidently converted his spot-kick with a Panenka before Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the decisive penalty to seal a memorable victory.

The win sends Egypt into the Round of 16, where they will face defending champions Argentina. Australia, meanwhile, bow out after a hard-fought performance.
