Sebastián Beccacece has resigned as Ecuador head coach after the team’s World Cup campaign ended with a 2-0 defeat to hosts Mexico on Tuesday night.
The 45-year-old Argentine said his contract was always set to conclude at the end of Ecuador’s tournament run. He praised his players, describing the squad as united, committed and worthy of admiration.
Beccacece spent two years in charge of Ecuador and guided the team to its fifth World Cup appearance. Under his leadership, Ecuador reached the knockout stage for only the second time, highlighted by a memorable group-stage victory over four-time champions Germany.
Despite that progress, Ecuador’s run came to an end after first-half goals from Mexico’s Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez. Beccacece said the team had exceeded expectations but ultimately fell short of extending its journey further.
Reflecting on his tenure, he said Ecuador had built a strong legacy through dignity, honesty and transparency, adding that the coaching staff would now take a different path.
