Netherlands’ all-time top scorer Memphis Depay missed the start of international duty after reporting his passport stolen in Brazil, where he currently plays for Corinthians.
Depay was scheduled to travel to the Netherlands on Sunday evening but was unable to do so due to the incident.
Ronald Koeman’s team will play World Cup qualifiers away to Malta on Thursday and at home against Finland on Sunday.
The Dutch football association (KNVB) stated that Depay is “doing everything he can” to make the trip “as soon as possible.”
Head coach Ronald Koeman said: “This is unfortunate, especially for Memphis, but also for us. Ideally, you want to begin your international preparations with a full squad.
“However, there are circumstances beyond our control. We hope he can join us at the training camp as soon as possible.”
Depay’s brace against Lithuania last month saw him surpass Robin van Persie to become the Netherlands’ all-time leading scorer with 52 goals in 104 appearances.
The Netherlands currently lead Group G on goal difference ahead of Poland, with a game in hand.
