Arguably the most eye-catching tie of the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup takes place in Houston, where five-time winners Brazil face a Japan side still chasing a first-ever knockout victory in the competition.
Brazil arrive as clear favourites. After an unconvincing start to their Group C campaign, the Seleção found their rhythm with back-to-back 3-0 wins over Haiti and Scotland, sealing top spot ahead of Morocco. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have scored seven unanswered goals since falling behind on matchday one, their best such run at a World Cup since 2002, the last time Brazil lifted the trophy.
There is, however, pressure on Brazil to deliver. They have not fallen at the first knockout hurdle since 1990, but have been eliminated in four of their last six World Cup knockout matches. Ancelotti will know that anything short of progression would be seen as a major failure for one of the tournament’s strongest squads.
Japan, meanwhile, enter the game as impressive outsiders. Hajime Moriyasu’s side went unbeaten in Group F, recording one win and two draws, and only missed out on top spot after a 1-1 draw against Sweden in their final group match. Their group-stage campaign showed discipline, organisation and maturity, making them one of the more dangerous underdogs left in the tournament.
The Samurai Blue have also built an excellent recent defensive record, keeping six clean sheets across their last eight matches. They have shown enough in the group phase to suggest they will not be easy opponents, even against a Brazil side widely viewed as one of the favourites to go all the way.
History, though, remains firmly against Japan. They have never won a World Cup knockout match, losing all four previous attempts, while they have managed just one win in five World Cup games against CONMEBOL opposition. Brazil have also won all four of their World Cup matches against teams from the AFC confederation.
Head-to-head, Brazil have dominated this fixture. Their only defeat in 14 meetings with Japan came in the most recent encounter, a 3-2 loss last October. The only previous World Cup meeting between the two nations came in 2006, when Brazil won 4-1.
Vinícius Júnior will again be the main man to watch. With another goal, he would become the first Brazilian since Rivaldo and Ronaldo in 2002 to score in each of his first four matches at a single World Cup. Japan will look to Ayase Ueda and Daichi Kamada, both on two goals, as they chase history of their own.
Brazil will be without Raphinha, while Japan are unlikely to have Takefusa Kubo available after he missed the final two group-stage matches.
Brazil remain the stronger side on paper and will be expected to progress, but Japan’s form so far has made them credible outsiders. If they can stay compact, frustrate Brazil and make the most of their chances, Houston could yet stage one of the defining shocks of the knockout rounds.
