The first gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will be awarded in Para Powerlifting, marking the first time a Para sport has opened the Games’ medal programme.
Competition takes place on 24 July at the SEC Armadillo, with some of the world’s leading Para powerlifters battling for the first title of the Games. Among the favourites are Malaysia’s two-time Paralympic champion Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, Nigeria’s world record holder Folashade Oluwafemiayo and England’s Paralympic medallist Olivia Broome.
Scotland will be represented by Hope Gordon and Finlay Davidson, with Gordon describing the opportunity to compete at home as a lifelong dream.
Weightlifting follows from 26 to 30 July, featuring stars including England’s defending champion Emily Campbell, India’s double Commonwealth gold medallist Mirabai Chanu and Australia’s reigning champion Eileen Cikamatana.
Glasgow 2026 will welcome around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories competing across 10 sports and six Para sports, making it the UK’s largest sporting event of the year.
