Comedian and actor Johnny Vegas has thrown his support behind the Bowls and Para Bowls competitions at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, sharing his passion for the sport as organisers continue to build excitement ahead of the event.
Known for his distinctive humour and memorable television and film roles, including Benidorm, Vegas offered a colourful description of the sport while helping promote tickets for the Games, which are available from as little as £10.
Describing the unique appeal of bowls, Vegas painted a vivid picture of a bowl making its way across the rink, calling it “a coronation of brilliance” and “exhilarating, at a gentle pace.”
Bowls and Para Bowls will be staged at the SEC Centre, where a new indoor format will create a lively atmosphere featuring four rinks in action simultaneously, accompanied by music to enhance the spectator experience.
The actor, who starred in the 2003 film Blackball and has been a keen bowler throughout his life, said the sport has always played an important role in his life. He continues to play regularly at his local club on Merseyside and believes bowls is accessible to everyone.
Vegas encouraged spectators to attend the Games, saying they would witness the world’s best players before being able to experience the sport themselves without significant expense.
Reflecting on the skill involved, he praised elite bowlers for their remarkable control and precision while encouraging fans to admire their talent rather than compare themselves to it.
He also highlighted the inclusive nature of bowls, describing it as a sport that welcomes people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, allowing communities to come together through a shared passion.
For the first time in Commonwealth Games history, the Bowls and Para Bowls competitions will be played indoors, bringing spectators closer to the action in what organisers hope will provide an exciting and entertaining experience.
Glasgow 2026, taking place from 23 July to 2 August, will be the largest sporting event held in the United Kingdom this year, welcoming around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories competing across 10 sports and six Para sports at four venues throughout the city.
