Australia continued its impressive start to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by producing another dominant display across several events on the second day of competition, particularly in the swimming pool and gymnastics arena.
One of the day’s biggest talking points came in the men’s 100m breaststroke, where Australia’s Sam Williamson secured the gold medal after edging out England’s Filip Nowacki. Pre-race favourite Adam Ramsay-Peaty had to settle for bronze but remained positive afterwards, insisting setbacks are part of an athlete’s journey.
England also celebrated success in the pool as Georgia Sheffield broke the Commonwealth Games record to win the women’s S14 200m freestyle, while compatriot Will Ellard claimed victory in the men’s event. Australia added further gold medals through Alex Perkins in the women’s 50m butterfly and the women’s freestyle relay team.
In artistic gymnastics, Australia captured the women’s team title ahead of Canada, with England completing the podium in third place. England’s Abi Martin also earned an individual bronze medal after a strong performance during the competition.
Elsewhere, England enjoyed victories in team sports by defeating Scotland in the women’s 3×3 basketball and recording a convincing win over Northern Ireland in the netball competition. Scotland, however, suffered a setback after home favourite Eilish McColgan withdrew from the Games because of injury.
